Social Workers

Jo Shakes

  • Support Services

Hi my name is Jo Shakes and I have been practicing social work for over 20 years.  A significant part of my career has been helping individuals and families who have been affected by or experienced sexual abuse/assault. Currently I have my own business where I provide professional supervision and undertake contract social work for various agencies.  I love spending time with my family, reading and wakeboarding.

I am 63 years and I live rurally.  I am married and enjoy riding and breeding paint horses (as you can probably tell from my photo!).  I am a self-employed Social Worker and Supervisor, having served 18 plus years at CYFs.

  • Assessments - Neuropsychological

I gained my doctorate in neuropsychology from Melbourne University.  I worked in Liaison Psychiatry as locum neuropsychologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, and then returned to New Zealand.  I worked as neuropsychologist for a multidisciplinary organisation, and then went into private practice.  I’ve been working in private practice for 12 years now.  Clients include those with injury related brain injuries, neurological disorders including tumour, epilepsy, dementia, vascular problems and also those with cognitive impairment associated with mental health disorders.  I enjoy my work, have lots of interests outside of work, and enjoy spending time with friends and family.

  • Office Manager
  • Programme Administrator

After living in the US for thirty plus years, I returned to New Zealand five years ago and settled at Mt. Maunganui.  I tramp with the local group PacknBoots and maintain their website.  My other interests include photography and genealogy.  I am also a big animal lover and volunteer with a local wildlife rescue group.  I will be our Office Manager handling the administrative side of the office.  If you have any questions, I can help!
